Level walk: this is a Grade 1 walk starting at Shaws Bridge at 10:17am (NOT Drumbo) and walking along the Lagan towpath to the Giant's Ring, a henge monument at Ballynahatty, near Shaw's Bridge, Belfast. The site consists of a circular enclosure, 180m in diameter and 2.8 hectares in area, surrounded by a circular earthwork bank 3.5m high. The Giant's Ring dates from around 2700BC, meaning that it predates the Egyptian pyramids. The original purpose of the monument was most likely as a meeting place or as a memorial to the dead.
Mike is offering Grade 4 mountain walk - meeting at Kilbroney car-park at 10:30am the route will take in the Big Stone, Slieve Martin, Knockshee, Watergap River valley with a return to Kilbroney via Rostrevor Forest. Total length will be 10.5 miles(17 kms), total ascent:450 metres and difficulty: Moderate/Difficult.
Walkers meet at 9:45am at Jethro Centre, Lurgan on Thursdays for car share and minibus. Some members meet at Portadown Rugby Football Club (PRFC) at 9:30am for car share although the time may vary depending on where we are walking.
