Deers Meadow and cattle pen on Moyad Road

for Pigeon Rock and Slievemageogh

Cattle Pen - lower car park (J 269 235) beside Pigeon Rock

Follow your preferred route to Banbridge and then Rathfriland. On entering Rathfriland, turn left onto Main Street (A25) and continue to follow A25, turning right on to Downpatrick Street and passing (if you're able) Graham's Ice Cream and the bus station (where there are facilities at rear of car park), to edge of Rathfriland where you should take a right turn onto Hilltown Road. Follow this into Hilltown, turning left in front of the former church onto the Castlewellan Road (B8). As you leave Hilltown, turn right onto Kilkeel Road (B27) and follow this until you come to the Spelga Dam (BT34 5XL). There are facilities beside Spelga car park but they are usually shut when we arrive - it's best to use facilities in Hilltown (to left of the former church) or in Rathfriland.

Deers Meadow car park

Drive past Spelga turning right at the T junction towards Kilkeel on Moyad Road (B27). About one mile further on there is a road to the right which "disappears" into the reservoir. You can park along this road if approaching Pigeon Rock from the north or climbing Muck.

Ford and Cattle Pen

One mile further towards Kilkeel (OS grid ref.: J 269 235) there is a gated entrance to the right which gives access to an informal gravel parking area and the cattle pen beside the ford over White Water river. From here you can cross the river and climb to the the southern end of Pigeon Rock and/or to Slievemageogh.
